According to ADHD Coaches Boston, “ADHD Is Not A Joke,”

Some people say jokingly that they “think that they have ADHD” when they notice they are jumping from one topic to the next, can’t focus, miss appointments, forget or lose things. They may even try to excuse their behavior by joking that they have ADHD. But those with ADHD know that it is no joke. ADHD Coaches Boston can help.

What is ADD and ADHD?

The terms ADD and ADHD are used interchangeably by many people and stand for attention deficit disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. You can have Attention Deficit with or without hyperactivity.

When Does ADHD Develop? Can I get It As An Adult?

The prevailing thinking for decades, has been that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that arises in childhood. However, now we know that ADHD can occur in adulthood. Although some believe these cases to be a continuation of childhood ADHD, recent attention in the field has turned to the possibility that ADHD may arise in adults not previously affected by it.

Behaviors of Someone With ADHD

When you have ADHD your brain is wired a little bit differently. As a result of this you may:

  • Struggle with prorastination and self-discipline.
  • Have difficulty staying focused but on things that are of interest to you- you can hyper-focus for hours.
  • Often seek new adventures and start numerous projects, but complete few of them.
  • Feel like an underachiever (often despite many accomplishments).
  • Find challenging tasks easier to accomplish than routine or boring ones.
  • Have challenges with organizing and planning.
  • Are not a good judge of how long things take to do or how long they last.
  • May have trouble being on time to meetings, events, other things on your schedule
Managing Alone

Managing ADHD is challenging. Most people with ADHD are of high intelligence so may be able to manage their ADHD through high school. But trying to manage without help in college or at work is near impossible because of the number of tasks and schedules  that need to be managed.

Medication

Ther are many medications that can help reduce symptoms of ADHD and allow you to focus and sustain attention. Medication may help but coaching is still recommended because you will still need to learn ways to plan, schedule, prioritize and systematize your tasks. Doing so will reduce your stress level and allow you to balance school, work and personal life.

Coaching for ADHD

ADHD coaches are more directive and consultative than non-ADHD coaches. There are special credentialing for ADHD coaches (which we have). Together, we work on alternative approaches to better manage ADHD symptoms, tools for ADHD management and strategies for dealing with common ADHD-related problems, like poor sleep habits, time management, planning and organization. Coaching is not a substitute for appropriate medical treatment or for psychotherapy. Many of our clients are also seeing a therapist as some suffer from anxiety or depression, which is common with ADHD.
